ISRAEL - A day in the North

Our first full day in Israel, and we were taken on a whistlestop tour of the North.. Our aim was to head for Rosh Hanikra and then go to Akko before heading home. However the best way to start a trip in Israel is to stop for coffee and something to eat, and we stopped in the most beautiful little village . . .

Rosh Hanikra is on the northern most tip of Israel's mediterranean coastline. It forms the sea border with Lebanon. Rosh Hanikra can be a volatile border. In 2006 during the Israel/Lebanon conflict three Israel soldiers were kidnapped by Hezbollah. Their bodies were unceremoniously returned to this border, an act with sparked a war. Today it was calm and peaceful, with little hint of conflict. . .

although the navy patrolled the border, which was marked out in the sea by yellow buoys. . .

I don't think that this cat knows the meaning of No Man's Land.. unless it was a spy???

Rosh Hanikra has beautiful cliffs and caves, I think that is what is supposed to interest foreign visitors. I couldn't help being more interested in the border though . . .

although I was quite fascinated by this chap waiting for some fish . . .

The sea views were pretty good too!

And then on to Akko, a small town south of Rosh Hanikra. Akk is an old crusader stronghold, and we walked through tunnels dug by the crusdaers in the twelfth century. The town was simply wonderful, and I wish that I was a better photographer to show you how stunning it was. We adored the Souk , but I have better pictures of the Jerusalem Souk...

This lady was putting out the rubbish, but she looked simply great!

and this chap mending his nets was an artist's dream . . .

and obviously this is one the original crusader boats???

The citadel in the town centre was in poor repair, and unsafe to enter.. it shows how poor a country Israel is, that there simply isn't enough money to make repairs to these wonderful and historic towns.
and then to a hummous restaurant for lunch... I think anyway!
