France - Places of Interest

The nearest town to where we were staying was Belves a mediaeval town in the Pergord Noir region of the Dordogne. These photos were taken on the walk from the swimming pool into town

On Monday we took a bus upstream and then canoed 14km (yes, you did read that correctly!) back to Port D'Enveaux. En route we passed Castlenaud and Beyniac, both of which are impressive Chateaux on the river Dordogne. The first picture is of Beyniac from our canoe. Impressive eh???

and once we had passed Beyniac, this is the view from the river....

this is Castlenaud....

We visited Chateau Milandes on our last afternoon (see later posts for pictures of the falconry). Josephine Baker lived here after the war and redesigned much of the house. She called it her 'Sleeping Beauty House'. I wonder why?

We visited Cadouin for supper one evening. It is a beautiful square town, dominated by the church. For many years this was a place for Christian pilgrims as the church houses a shroud, thought to be that worn by Jesus in the tomb. However dating techniques early in the last century found arabic writing on the material, thus disproving it's authenticity. However the church is still impresive, shroud or not!
